A dozen inmates, including murderers, reportedly escaped from a New Orleans jail early Friday. Fox News reported that New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said her agency was notified at 10:30 a.m. that there were “11 escapees from the sheriff’s jail.”
“This is an urgent and serious situation,” she said during a news conference. “Please be mindful. We have requested pictures of these escapees from the sheriff’s office. … I also want to appeal to the public: if you see something and think it’s not right, don’t hesitate. Call 911.”
According to the sheriff’s office and news reports, the inmates broke through a wall behind a toilet, leaving written messages behind. The escaped inmates are considered “armed and dangerous,” the sheriff’s office added. A multi-agency search is underway. One escapee has been captured.
The jail is located just 2 miles from the French Quarter and Caesars Casino, leading to unrest in the area.
