LAS VEGAS — The Carolina Hurricanes ended a 20-year championship drought with a commanding 3-0 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 6 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final on Sunday night at T-Mobile Arena. Goaltender Brandon Bussi delivered a stellar 22-save shutout, while the Hurricanes’ depth and resilience powered them to their second title in franchise history (and first since 2006).
The Hurricanes wrapped up the playoffs with a dominant 16-3 record. Jackson Blake contributed a goal and an assist, Taylor Hall scored the opener, and Nikolaj Ehlers added an empty-netter. Captain Jordan Staal earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, posting 12 points (8 goals, 4 assists) overall and 6 goals in the Final.
Head coach Rod Brind’Amour, who captained Carolina’s 2006 Cup-winning team, became just the seventh person in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup with the same franchise as both a player and coach (and the fourth to do so as captain and coach). “This didn’t just happen tonight,” Brind’Amour said. “These guys have been working for eight years for this.”
Key Moments in Game 6
- First Period: Hall opened the scoring at 3:47 with a sharp far-side shot from the left circle that beat Carter Hart. Bussi preserved the lead with a big breakaway stop on Brett Howden.
- Second Period: Blake made it 2-0 at 13:31 with a one-timer off a Logan Stankoven feed. Bussi continued to stonewall Vegas threats.
- Third Period: Jack Eichel hit the crossbar on a power play. With Hart pulled late, Bussi made several key stops, including on Tomas Hertl. Ehlers sealed it with an empty-net goal.
Vegas had led the series 2-1 but was outscored 12-5 in the final three games. Hart stopped 20 shots in the loss.
Spotlight on Brandon Bussi: From Journeyman to Champion
Bussi, a 27-year-old undrafted netminder from Long Island, emerged as one of the postseason’s unlikeliest heroes. After Frederik Andersen started the first three rounds and the beginning of the Final, Bussi stepped in during Game 3 (relieving in a deficit) and took over from Game 4 onward. He stopped 81 of 87 shots faced against Vegas. In the clincher, he denied multiple high-quality chances, including breakaways and rebounds, earning chants of “Buss-i!” from Carolina fans in the building. This marked his third career shutout.
Bussi’s path included time in the ECHL and AHL (undrafted, Boston Bruins system, then claimed off waivers by Carolina after a Panthers stint). He posted strong regular-season numbers (31 wins in 39 starts) and earned a team-friendly extension. His playoff heroics capped a remarkable rise.
Broader Context
Staal’s leadership and the team’s depth shone throughout, with contributors like Seth Jarvis highlighting the group’s collective strength. The Hurricanes’ fans traveled well and celebrated loudly on the road.
This victory marks a full-circle moment for Brind’Amour and the organization, rewarding years of sustained contention. The Hurricanes are Stanley Cup champions once again.
