19-year-old Kimi Antonelli makes history as youngest Monaco winner

According to The Guardian, 19-year-old Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli delivered a masterclass at the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, becoming the youngest winner in the race’s history while securing his fifth consecutive victory of the season.

Antonelli started from pole position after an outstanding qualifying lap on only his second visit to the tricky Monte Carlo streets. He edged out Max Verstappen by four-hundredths of a second and Lewis Hamilton by two-tenths, leaving even Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff stunned.

“I thought, this is going to be impossible… Out of nowhere, the last two corners he made the difference. Looking at the onboard afterwards, it’s unbelievable.” — Toto Wolff on Antonelli’s pole lap

The race was chaotic and much-delayed. With 10 laps remaining, it was red-flagged after track surface damage and crashes, including one involving Charles Leclerc. After a long wait and a standing restart, Antonelli stayed composed under pressure to control the race and take the checkered flag, The Boston Globe and Orlando Sentinel report.

Lewis Hamilton finished second for Ferrari. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar completed the podium in third after dealing with engine issues and post-race investigations.

Championship Impact

Antonelli now leads the 2026 Drivers’ Championship by 66 points over Hamilton, with teammate George Russell a further two points back. The win marks his fifth in a row since his first victory in March, highlighting his rapid rise in just his second F1 season.

“You’re catching me up… He’s only 19, so just imagine what the future holds for him, but I’m going to do my best to try and chase him down for the rest of the year. It’s a real privilege to witness it.” — Lewis Hamilton

Antonelli reflected on his growth: “I matured a lot… That made me grow and also [my] mindset changed a lot compared to last year.”

Other Notable Moments

•  Max Verstappen retired on lap 1 after losing power at the start.
•  George Russell struggled, finishing outside the points after penalties.
•  Post-race confusion included multiple investigations and penalties, with some results initially uncertain (including pit lane speeding issues).

Antonelli celebrated the traditional way by jumping into Monaco harbor, capping a dominant weekend for Mercedes. The Italian sensation is proving untouchable on current form, raising questions about who can challenge him as the season progresses. Next up is the Spanish Grand Prix.
